Tennents' Sixes - 1984/85

Although United finished leading scorers in their group, and unbeaten, they were still eliminated. The reason for that lies in the failure in their two penalty shoot outs. The first against Hearts, the ultimate winners, ended 3-1 in the Maroons' favour. The second penalty disaster came in the crucial match with Aberdeen when Dons won through by 3-2, after Gough had already missed a penalty in normal time. Those penalty deciders meant that United failed to qualify for the semi-finals, despite defeating Dumbarton and Airdrie.
