Alec was with Crosshill Hearts and then Arbroath. He played his first game for United as a trialist and then signed and was a frequent starter in the side until he was called up for national service in February 1946. After he was demobbed in the Spring of 1948, he returned to United for season 1948-49 but he was restricted to just a handful of first team games until he was released in April 1949. He then signed for Cowdenbeath.
