Alf was with United Juniors and made his first Dundee United appearance as a trialist but soon afterwards went on military service.

By March 1943 he was a signed player. After demob, he returned but could not get established in the first team and went to Barrow (loan) and Lancaster City (loan) before moving to Barrow permanently in July 1947.
