Ian (aka Buddy) was the son of former United Manager Willie MacFadyen. He first signed for United reserves as an amateur from Ashdale Amateurs in August 1950. He joined the RAF on national service in November 1951 but remained with United in the resrves until August 1954 when he signed for Motherwell. He returned to Tannadice in the summer of 1959, playing his part in the promotion winning side that season but he was released in May 1960.
