Born in Dundee, Ian spent the majority of the 1970s with Chelsea, making nearly 300 appearances for the London club. After being released in August 1982, manager Jim McLean brought the experienced midfielder to Tannadice, and he featured regularly in the early months of season 1982-83. He played 10 League games as United went on to win the Premier Division title.

Released in October 1983, he had a short spell at Arbroath before returning to England to play regularly for Blackpool and Burnley, before retiring in 1989.
