Ally began his career at Motherwell. He spent time on loan at Clydebank, Liverpool and Bolton Wanderers before joining Rangers and then United. Ally was capped for Scotland in a 'B' international. He became the first choice keeper during the season in the First Division and played his part in regaining top flight status.

He began the next season as the No. 1 keeper but was forced out through injury and illness and unable to get back into the first team, he played reserve football until he left under freedom of contract in May 1998. He then signed for Morton.
