Paul joined Norwich City in late 1984 but a year later he was back in Scotland with United on loan. Within two weeks of arriving at Tannadice, he was signed permanently. He faced tough competition from established players and, consequently, spent most of his two years in the reserves. Paul accepted a move to Motherwell in March 1988 for a fee reported at 20,000.
