William was a youth player with his home city club CFF Paris before signing for Le Mans Union Club 72's B team in 2005, and spent three years with the French League side. In July 2008 he left France to join Neuchâtel Xamax, and then signed for Greek Superleague side Panetolikos in 2010.

After two seasons in Greece, he moved to England after a successful trial with Coventry City, signing a three year deal. However, just a year into his time there, he was one of a number of players who had their contracts terminated when the club went into administration. After a short spell with Bury, he rejoined his former club Panetolikos in January 2014, and in July 2015 he was signed by Greek rivals Veria FC on a two year deal.

William returned to the UK in August 2016 for a trial with United, and Ray McKinnon signed the defender on a one year deal. Forming a partnership with Mark Durnan at the heart of the defence, he was a vital part of the side that reached the Premiership play-offs and won the Challenge Cup, and with good form in his first six months he earned a contract extension in March 2017, keeping him at the club until 2019.
