A product of the youth systems at Heerenbeen and Ajax, Darko enjoyed his first taste of professional football while on loan to Sparta Rotterdam in 2009. During this time, he also represented Croatia at under 19 and under 21 levels. After leaving Ajax, Darko spent four years with different clubs in Austria (in which he holds citizenship) and Denmark.

Freed from his contract with Rheindorf Altach, Darko signed for United in mid July of the 2015-16 preseason, following the club's tour of the Netherlands. A less than impressive start to a poor season for United saw Darko relegated to the bench after a number of goalless appearances. His poor form continued and by the turn of the year, he was told by new manager Mixu Paatelainen that he would be free to move to another club. In May 2016, United agreed terms on the player's release.
