Although he was born in Russia, Mario is actually a Dutch national, having come through the youth ranks of Rotterdam regional side XerxesDZB. Establishing himself as a prolific goalscorer with the Dutch side, Mario was signed up by Sparta Rotterdam in January 2011, where he again found the net regularly, earning a contract extension later that year.

Mario's contract with Sparta expired at the end of the 2013-14 season and during the following pre-season, he joined United on a free transfer, signing a two year deal with the Club. Mario got off to an impressive start with a stunning long range strike against Motherwell to win the club's first home game of the new season, but a series of injuries and fitness problems saw him fall in and out of the side for its remainder. In March 2015, Mario collected a League Cup runners-up medal, starting for United against Celtic in the final at Hampden Park.

Ultimately, recurring injuries plagued Mario's time at United and under new head coach Mixu Paatelainen he failed to make an appearance and was released in November 2015.
