Climbing up through the youth ranks at Rangers from the age of 12, Charlie Telfer made his professional debut in 2014 against Stenhousemuir as a substitute in what would prove to be his one and only appearance for the Ibrox club. During his time under professional terms at Rangers, he also represented Scotland at Under-19 level. Upon the expiry of his contract, at the age of eighteen, he moved to Tannadice on a three year contract.

Charlie made his United debut in the opening game of the season at Pittodrie, coming on as a substitute in the 3-0 win over Aberdeen. After a few more sub appearances, he made his first starting eleven against St Mirren in November, scoring his first goal for the Club in a 3-0 win at Tannadice, and he collected the SPFL Young Player of the Month Award for that month. His second goal for United was just as special, scoring the sixth goal in the 6-2 victory over Dundee on New Years’ Day, and grabbed another two against Motherwell just a few weeks later. Charlie finished his first season with 15 starts for United and 10 substitute appearances.

With heavy competition for first team places in midfield, Charlie joined SPFL League One side Livingston on loan until the end of the 2015-16 season after a quiet start to United's campaign. He featured regularly for the Lions as they reached the SPFL Championship Promotion playoff, before returning to United in May. Under new manager Ray McKinnon, he returned to first team action during the 2016-17 pre-season.
