Educated at Menzieshill High School, Scott came through Unitedís youth system and at 16 years old signed a three year contract with the Club in 2011. He joined the first team squad for pre-season training at the start of the 2011-12 campaign, but a serious leg injury in training ruled him out of action for a full year. Scott fought back from that setback, and played a prominent role in Stevie Campbellís U20 side during the 2013-14 season, and was voted the U20s Player of the Year. Under new manager Jackie McNamara, he was rewarded with a contract extension that tied him to the club until June 2016, and he made his first team debut coming on as a substitute at Celtic Park in the final League game if the season.

Two months in to the 2014-15 season, Scott joined Airdrieonians on loan until January 2015, and scored within two minutes of his debut for the League One side. His impressive form saw his loan deal extended until the end of that season, and he went on to make 30 appearances as Airdrie narrowly missed out on a Championship Play-Off spot.

On his return to Tannadice, Scott signed a contract extension that would keep him at Tannadice until 2018, and he quickly moved in the first team squad for the 2015-16 season. He became a fixture in the midfield during a very difficult campaign, scoring his first goal for the Club in the League Cup win over Dunfermline in September 2015, retaining his place under manager Mixu Paatelainen, before the Finn's departure in April the following year.

In the Club's first season in the Championship under new manager Ray McKinnon, Scott maintained his place in the side as United campaigned for promotion, however, a broken foot suffered in March ended his season prematurely, keeping him out until the summer of 2017.
