Born in Dunfermline, Stevie started his professional career with Raith Rovers, where he played for four years, winning a Scottish League Cup winners' medal in 1994. His form earned him a move to Millwall at the age of 22 where he spent one season before returning to Scotland to play for Hibs. Following a successful loan spell with Dunfermline during the 1999/2000 season, Stevie joined the Pars on a permanent deal and went on to play more games for them than any other club throughout his career. In 2004, he moved to England once again to join Plymouth Argyle, but the move was cut short when he made his move to United.

Signing for the Terrors under manager Ian McCall, Stevie arrived at Tannadice during the January transfer window of the 2004/05 season on a three and a half year deal. Stevie's time at United was a short one, and he failed to recapture the goal scoring form he had enjoyed at his other clubs. He did, however, manage to collect a runners-up medal in the Scottish Cup final in May before he was released.
