Mark came through the youth system at Tannadice. He was capped for Scotland at Under-16, youth, Under-21 and 'B' international levels. After an early first team debut, he became a regular in the line up for three years and collected a Scottish Cup runners-up medal with in May 2005. In his final season with United he was repeatedly linked with a move to Celtic before finally moving to the Parkhead club in January 2006 for a reported m.

At Celtic, he earned a Scotland international cap in 2011, spending six years at Parkhead, mostly on the fringes, before moving on to Bristol City for the 2012-13 season.

Mark returned to United, initially on a six month contract, on August 20, 2013. In competition with Keith Watson for the right-back position, he moved in and out of the starting eleven upon his return. In May, he collected a runners-up medal in the Scottish Cup Final against St Johnstone as an unused substitute. Failing to make an appearance during the following season, his contract was terminated early in January 2015.
