Alan joined United from Elgin City and became a Scotland youth and Under-21 international. In his first three years with United, he played infrequently in the first team and had was on loan at Raith Rovers, Cowdenbeath and East Stirlingshire. The breakthrough came in October 1989. Alan played in the 1991 Scottish Cup final collecting a runners-up medal. In the latter stages of his United career he faced competition for the no. 1 jersey and was also sidelined by injury. He left in January 1995 to join St Johnstone for a fee of around 150,000.
