Willie was signed from Ayr United. He was a regular in the line up for the remainder of 1935-36 and re-signed for the next season, but after three months he was released and joined Lincoln City. He then appears to have joined Dundee briefly but at the beginning of season 1937-38 he was back with United. Following a match against Albion Rovers that United lost 4-1, Willie and his brother Dave, were suspended by the Club for allegedly ‘not trying’. They both appealed the decision to the SFA and United were ordered to reinstate Willie. He was released in April 1938.
