First Team Debuts

After that shock defeat at Fir Park 10 days previously, we ensured that there was no repeat by ruthlessly demolishing Motherwell with some polished and studied football despite the blustery conditions. The 13th minute didn't prove unlucky for us, producing the important opening goal. A Gallacher corner was dummied by Richard Gough, Eamonn Bannon misdirected his shot but Paul Sturrockfell backwards to score with an overhead kick. It was all United and a second goal materialised after Eamonn Bannon embarked on a solo run which ended on the edge of the box, but Paul Sturrock reacted quickly to divert the loose ball past John Gardiner.

The unrelenting pressure continued after the interval and within a minute the lead had been extended to three, when Eamonn Bannon crashed in a fierce volley from just outside the box. A neat exchange between Kevin Gallacher and Davie Dodds brought our fourth goal. Kevin Gallacher just outside the box drew two defenders before parting to Davie Dodds who had time to pick his spot.
