First Team Debuts

The gale-force conditions was a prime factor in ruining this tie as a spectacle. Taking advantage of the elements in the first half, Motherwell did most of the pressing and Doyle struck the outside of the post and then Richard Gough's last minute intervention to keep a Walker effort from crossing the line. However, 'Well's best chance of the opening period came just before the turnaround, when John Reilly struck the post.

Less than a minute into the second half we got the all important opening goal. An Eamonn Bannon corner was laid into Richard Gough's path by Paul Sturrock, and the international defender hammered in a shot from 12 yards which took a deflection and beat John Gardiner. With wind advantage we held on to that narrow lead, and John Holt with a tremendous 20yarder, and substitute Tommy Coyne both came close to extending that lead.
