This top of the table tussle ended all square in a fast, furious and fascinating match played in absolutely atrocious conditions. They had several shots just wide of the target, most notably from John Robertson and Gary Mackay. Undoubtedly the most glaring chance came right on the interval. Young Kevin Gallacher, back helping the defence, illegally interrupted Gary Mackay's surge towards goal. The Hearts' midfielder took the spot-kick himself but Billy Thomson, flung himself to his left and finger-tipped the shot round the post. If anything, Hearts stepped up their efforts after the break and Billy Thomson brilliantly tipped over a Mackay 20-yarder. Six minutes later and even Billy Thomson could do nothing to prevent Gary Mackay scoring. A Colquhoun cross was headed down by Sandy Clark to Gary Mackay who rammed a low shot just inside the post. Hearts' lead tasted just six minutes, Tom Coyne, a substitute for Ian Redford, mishit a shot which Kevin Gallacher latched on to. The youngster turned the ball back goal wards, it wasn't cleared properly and Eamonn Bannon struck a superb volley past Smith for the equaliser.
