First Team Debuts

United stunned the Ibrox support in the first minute, when Malpas made ground down the left and sent his cross beyond McPherson to Davie Dodds, left leg heavily strapped up, who headed in off the post to give United an early lead. Rangers goalkeeper Nicky Walker proceeded to keep the Glasgow side in the game, with saves from Gallacher, Malpas and a point blank save from Redford. Apart from a couple of corners, Rangers failed to threaten in the first half, with their closest chance being a clearing header from Hegarty that flew just over the bar. The closing minutes of the first half saw Gallacher hit the bar, Walker save from Dodds and Redford clipping the post with a header.

United were again the more attractive side after the interval, with Gallacher going only inches away with a drive from outside the box, Walker again saved from Redford, and Dodds also went close. A number of substitutions for both sides disrupted the pattern of the game, and with 10 minutes left to play, Ally McCoist hit a snap shot from around 20 yards out that seemed to deceive Thomson to give Rangers an undeserved equaliser.
