At first sight this may look a narrow victory. Hard earned it was, close it should not have been. Those circumstances were almost entirely due to Clydebank 'keeper Jim Gallacher who performed heroics. Early on he dived full length to block Paul Sturrock's volley, then he acted similarly to save a net bound header from Richard Gough. Just before half-time he denied Tom Coyne by bravely smothering a through ball. Despite all these chances it was Clydebank who went in ahead at the interval. Billy Thomson made a brilliant save at the feet of Shanks, but the ball rebounded to Martin Hughes who shot into the empty net. In an attempt to force the equaliser Richard Gough was pushed forward to the front line, but it was the introduction of Ralph Milne for Dave Beaumont midway through the half, which brought dividends. A long free-kick by Dave Narey was lobbed into the net by Ralph Milne. Five minutes later a Bankies' defender cannoned his clearance against a colleague and Davie Dodds scored what proved to be the winner from around 12 yards.
