First Team Debuts

United headed their way to victory, but once again the onus of scoring fell to the defenders, with the late contribution of Davie Dodds, the first goal by a forward for three games. Motherwell had effectively held us in the opening stages until the 35th minute. A searching free-kick by Dave Narey was met by Paul Hegarty at the far post and his header back across the face of the goal, struck a Motherwell defender to deflect the ball past a bemused John Gardiner.

Five minutes later, United's head men struck again. Ralph Milne's free-kick into the heart of Well's defence was met by Richard Gough who steered a header wide of John Gardiner. We failed to capitalise on that solid foundation after the interval, indeed, Motherwell looked an improved eleven in that second period and Billy Thomson superbly pushed a curling shot from Andy Dornan past the post. Then Ian MacLeod headed an Andy Harrow cross narrowly past the post.

Towards the end we stepped up a gear and Richard Gough appeared to have scored a third before a linesman's flag cut short home celebrations. Applause was only delayed a few minutes though, because a Sturrock cross was headed on by Paul Hegarty for Davie Dodds to apply the finishing touch at the far post.
