United opened season 1961-62 at Fir Park and produced a high scoring game with Motherwell eventually coming out on top 5-3. Hero that day for the Steelmen was Morris Stevenson. The winger who was to later play for United scored a hat-trick. Pat Quinn scored Motherwells other two goals whilst Neil Mochan, Jim Irvine and, Dennis Gillespie were on target for the Tannadice side
