If the performance was not one of our classics, there was no doubling the hard work put in by the side. Deprived as they were of internationalists Hegarty, Malpas and Sturrock. It may not have been attractive fair for the neutrals back home who watched the match live on television, but the end result was a great boost for the Club and the game in ScotIand. The first threat on the United goal came in 12 minutes when Bursac shot over from close in. The same player was again off target quarter of an hour later. At the other John Clark saw his free-kick pushed round the post and John headed the resultant corner just over the bar. Gary McGinnis came to the rescue when he cleared Jerolimov's effort off the line in the 58th minute, immediately Kevin Gallacher broke clear at the other end but shot when Ralph Milne was well placed. Hajduk looked a weary side but received renewed hope when Andrijasevic's thundering shot was tipped on to the bar and five minutes later Deveric stole in behind the back of the United defence only to see his shot strike the post. That effectively ended the Yugoslavs challenge and with ten minutes to go skipper Dave Narey almost got a winner when his first time effort at the near post from a Ralph Milne cross went inches wide.
