Just a day removed from their 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen, United sent a relatively strong team to play Carnoustie Panmure Juniors in what was to be a testimonial match for Davie Falconer, Westfield Park's long time groundsman and the Gowfers' first ever treasurer.

Most notably, Billy Kirkwood, John Holt and Willie Pettigrew started the match for United, having played ninety minutes for the Tangerines just the day before. Iain Phillip and Derek Stark, who had not been involved since playing midweek against Lokeren, were brought into the testimonial starting eleven. Carnoustie drafted in a few guest players for the game, namely John Sime from Brechin City, Stevie Mylles of Arbroath and Motherwell's Albert Kydd.

The match itself was played in typical testimonial fayre. Ralph Milne and Willie Pettigrew both netted in the final moments of the first half to give the visiting United a lead at the break and just after the resumption Derek Addison made it 3-0. All substitutes for both sides got a run out at different stages in the game in what would have proved a useful Sunday exercise for Jim McLean and his side.
