The game provided United's Scandinavian imports their first taste of a Tayside derby — and how they relished it ! In a match contested in driving sleet and snow the foreign contingent were in their element and Swede Örjan Persson pointed the way with an early headed goal from a Jimmy Briggs' free-kick. Dundee's equaliser came in 31 minutes from the foot of Charlie Cooke who directed a superb Andy Penman cutback behind Mackay. However, United required only 60 seconds of the second half to restore their lead when Dennis Gillespie poked a rebound into the net. But back came the home side again and Kenny Cameron took full advantage of a slack Doug Smith passback to level things again. United were clearly determined not to allow a point to slip and Finn Dřssing nodded in a Tommy Millar free-kick to make it 3-2. And in the final minute a blistering 30 yarder from Örjan Persson made it a night of glory for the Tannadice side.
