Marginally over 8,000 turned up to pay tribute to Paul Sturrock on a sultry afternoon which must of at least made the Spaniards feel at home.

Paul made an early contribution finding himself in space, but unfortunately the move petered out when Paul fell over the ball and injured himself at the same time. The first threat on goal came when a looping header from Paul Hegarty went over after four minutes. Dutchman Freddy Van Der Hoorn, making his Tannadice debut, is a defender but it was in attack that he first caught the eye when a sweeping crossfield pass from Paul Sturrock set up a shooting opportunity, but Freddy's shot was saved.

The frequency of raids on the Real Sociedad goal increased around the half hour mark with Billy McKinlay prominent. The midfielder had three near misses and shortly afterwards Dave Narey saw his shot headed off the line. A Maurice Malpas shot also suffered a similar fate six minutes from the interval. The goal which decided the match came two minutes before halftime. A searching ball from Freddy Van Der Hoorn was nodded back past his own 'keeper by Alaba. Darren Jackson, following up, didn't have to get a touch as the ball rolled into the empty net for an own goal.

It was only immediately after the interval that Real Sociedad posed any real scoring threat. Fuentes was inches away from getting a touch to a cross from the right with the goal at his mercy and then Jimmy Mclnally stepped in to mop up a dangerous situation. Just after this Paul Sturrock made his exit to a rousing reception and was replaced by Kevin Gallacher.

A header from Darren Jackson was cleared off the line, but though play became more open scoring chances were limited. Scott Thomson made way for a "trialist" goalkeeper in the shape of Hamish McAlpine, but in truth the "youngster" was never tested. A couple of minutes before the end a Paul Hegarty back header was beaten away by Gonzalez, the Real 'keeper as the match drew to a close.
