United made heavy weather of overcoming First Division Forfar. After dominating the early stages United were unlucky not to take the lead when John Holt saw his drive from outside the box strike the underside of the bar. The same player was even more unfortunate a couple of minutes later when he was adjudged to handle the ball in the box at the other end. John Clark, the Forfar version, tucked in the penalty. On the stroke of half-time, United equalised, also from the spot. Ray Lorimer pulled down Paul Sturrock and Ralph Milne made no mistake from the shot United's winger was also the match winner.

Ten minutes after the restart Paul Sturrock fed Ralph and his quick shot on the turn beat Moffat. Forfar did have a couple of great chances near the end when Gordon Scott squandered two gilt-edged chances that would have made United regret their earlier indiscretions in front of goal.
