The first half produced plenty of good football but was unproductive in terms of goals. Davie Dodds saw a header touched on to the bar by the 'keeper in 33 minutes and Robertson in the visitors' goal made a superb save from Bannon just before the interval.

Arbroath produced a couple of threatening moments early in the second half and defensively were blunting United's attacking edge.

Extra time appeared to be on the cards when Dave Narey picked out Davie Dodds with his chip and the striker broke the deadlock with his well struck right foot volley from 12 yards. Within a minute Ralph Milne put the result beyond doubt when he intercepted an opposition pass and slammed the ball home despite the partial block by Robertson in goal.
