A Dundee Derby at Dens Park in the League Cup was how United began what was to prove a season of quickly changing fortunes. However, all went well on the opening day. Dennis Gillespie put United ahead after 14 minutes, and Lewis Thom extended that lead twenty minutes later, before Andy Penman's penalty conversion reduced the arrears before the interval. With Bert Slater performing heroics in Dundee's goal to keep United at bay, it came as something as a surprise when Bobby Waddell notched a somewhat fortuitous equaliser with 20 minutes left. But seven niinutes from the end Frannie Munro, capped a promising debut, by steering in a header at the far post from a Johnny Graham cross, to secure a good start to the League Cup campaign.
