There was a counter attraction across the road at Dens Park as Dundee faced Johnstone at the same time as this match. This no doubt accounted for a poor turnout at Tannadice. Around 2,500 fans filtered in with around 9,000 over at Dens. The University side kicked off the match but it was United who were most prominent early on. Bald struck the post with a brilliant drive to set the tone for the match. A period of midfield play followed, with Rintoul the stand out in the middle with his speed and crossing ability shining through. The inside left for the 'Varsity did come close when he failed to capitalise on a splendid chance. Half time arrived with no scoring and United in control.Straight from the re-start, it was United on the front foot. A splendid cross from Rintoul picked out Joe O'Kane and he made no mistake by knocking home. The amateurs' goalkeeper was saving well, but four minutes later Willie Oswald netted from another cross by the outside left. A minute later Joe O'Kane scored his second goal. United were having matters pretty much their own way, and it was no surprise when after another ten minuted, Dave Richards headed through. Play went to the other end, but Ross, with an open goal, sent over. Eight minutes from time Joe O'Kane got his hat trick, but Aberdeen after a breakaway got a goal through Gordon.
