First Team Debuts

This was perhaps one of the most disappointing clashes between the pair for some time. Neither set of forwards was able to get the better of two very capable defences.

Evidently the absence of international strikers, Paul Sturrock for United and Paul McStay for Celtic, was probably a contributory factor to this defence dominated contest. Celtic did get the ball in the net in the first half but Mo Johnston was given off-side when he headed in. Tom Coyne headed narrowly past early in the game and those were the only features of a dull first half.

Davie Dodds had the best chance of the second half but failed to score. Just as a goal-less draw looked inevitable, Davie Provan struck a shot which was saved by John Holt with his hands but, in keeping with the match, Peter Grant shot weakly from the spot for Hamish to save with his knees.
