First Team Debuts

The final preparations for the return leg with Manchester United appeared to be going well in the opening half-hour.

After dominating the early play we took the lead when Eamonn Bannon took a Maurice Malpas pass, transferred the ball to Davie Dodds who prodded the ball past Gordon Arthur. Despite spurning several chances, there was little thought of anything other than a United win until Dumbarton struck twice in the closing stages of the first half. John Bourke directed a header goalwards and Dave Narey was debited with their equaliser. Then Bourke broke away, beat Thomson, slipped, but got in a shot which Gerry Crawley pushed over the line.

This dramatically changed the pattern of the match and Dumbarton were very much in the picture in the second period. It was United, however, who got back on level terms when a Paul Hegarty shot was handled in the box and Eamonn Bannon struck home an equaliser.
