First Team Debuts

Milestones

For the fourth time this season. United succumbed to opposition who had suffered a mid-week League Cup exit. On this occasion, however, Hearts exacted immediate and deserved revenge on their Skol Cup conquerors.

Yet it could have been a different story had two early chances not gone a begging. Paul Sturrock carved out a scoring opportunity and Eamonn Barmon struck the post from an acute angle. Then Davie Dodds set up a chance for Billy Kirkwood, but his shot went just past Smith's right-hand post.

Hearts went ahead when Donald Park latched on to a partly cleared free-kick to drive the ball home. Four minutes later, John Robertson picked up a goal kick from Hamish McAlpine and strode on to score from just inside the box. It was uphill all the way from then on, with United rarely looking like making inroads into that Hearts lead.
