First Team Debuts

Premier newcomers Dumbarton proved far from the cannon fodder so many had expected this term. Resolute in defence, with Mark Clougherty outstanding, a draw looked to be in the Sons' grasp but the introduction of Tom Coyne late in the game broke the deadlock.

Replacing John Holt, Tom was fouled almost immediately. Paul Sturrock's quickly taken free kick was flicked on by Davie Dodds and Tom Coyne steered the ball wide of Gordon Arthur for the only goal of the game.

Although not one of United's better performances enough chances had been created and passed up to have tied up both points much earlier in the match.
