On one of the hottest opening days to the season for many a long day. United repeated their mid-week victory over Nottingham Forest, even down to Ralph Milne scoring both goals. The first threat on either goal came in 11 minutes when a Whittaker shot went just over. United, however, took the lead with their first serious assault on the Hearts' goal. Maurice Malpas won the ball in his own half, broke clear before parting to Eamonn Bannon on the left. Eamonn's perfect centre was headed down past Henry Smith by Ralph Milne. Billy Thomson, making his debut, had to react quickly when he diverted a snap shot from Alex MacDonald to retain United's one goal advantage. Despite having the lion's share of the play. United couldn't extend their lead. Billy Thomson once again came to the rescue with a great save from a Whittaker header. Three minutes later Ralph Milne latched on to a touch from Paul Sturrock and raced on, beating MacDonald before lobbing over the advancing Smith from the edge of the box to clinch the points.
