Three goals in nine minutes of the first half ended Brechin's Forfarshire Cup aspirations in the semi-final at Tannadice last night. United started off playing over-elaborate football. McKay guided home a Quinn pass in the 18th minute, and then the home side dominated play. In the 24th minute the bustling McKay rose above a crowd of players to head home a Quinn lob, and three minutes later Grant did the same with a Cruickshank corner-kick. Brechin staged a fighting come-back towards the interval, and Paris almost scored when he attempted to lob over Edmiston's head. The 'keeper just managed to get his finger tips to it. Five minutes from the interval, however, Mitchell was brushed off the ball when he looked like scoring, and Skinner thumped home the resulting penalty.

The second half was one-way traffic. Eight minutes after the resumption a Quinn shot was deflected into the net by McKay for the centre's "hat-trick". Quinn was the most enterprising home raider, and in the 68th minute he whacked a beauty against the upright. Kinnell, following up, prodded the rebound home. Five minutes from the end the inside man scored a sixth from an awkward angle.
