A defiant Brechin side pushed United all the way before we eventually won through to meet Dundee in the semi-finals of this season's Forfarshire Cup.

Extra time seemed an unlikely prospect when United took a five-minute lead, Alex Taylor creating the opening for Paul Sturrock to run on to beat Neilson from just inside the box. Within five minutes Brechin were on level terms when Alex Rose struck a 20-yarder past Billy Thomson. From then on United succeeded in creating and then missing a series of chances, including a Richard Gough shot which hit the post. At the other end Brechin did likewise but the sides remained deadlocked at the end of normal time.

In extra time United finally made the breakthrough when Paul Hegarty knocked down a corner for John Reilly to score from close in. A minute later John Clark's hard low cross from the right was headed in by Paul Sturrock. Then Eamonn Bannon netted a penalty, awarded after John Young had flattened Ralph Milne for United's third goal in five minutes.

None.
