United well and truly buried their Hammers hoodoo with this emphatic victory at the seventh time of asking. West Ham were pinned back from the early stages and in the ninth minute Davie Dodds flicked on an Eamonn Bannon corner to let in Paul Hegarty to finish off the move with a simple header. Just on half-time Eamonn Bannon beat Allen to Ralph Milne's through ball and curved a beauty past McAlister from just outside the box.

A John Clark header gave Ralph Milne a chance in the 54th minute and his drive was deflected in by Eamonn Bannon for his second goal of the match. Confirming United's almost total dominance Ralph Milne chipped in a 25-yarder (almost a replica of the Dens Park goal) for the fourth with quarter of an hour left.
