More than two weeks after the last league match of the season, United fulfilled an engagement up north by playing Forres Mechanics at Mosset Park. The match was a testimonial for Andy Porter of the Highland League side who proved no match for a United side who had just earned a place in the Texaco Cup by finishing sixth in the Scottish First Division. From the moment Jim Henry opened the scoring in the 20th minute there was never any doubt about the outcome and seven minutes later Kenny Cameron score the first of his two goals that evening. Joe Watson also grabbed a couple in the space of seven minutes midway through the second half whilst Kenny Cameron's second goal was sandwiched between his brace. When Denis Gillespie came on as a substitute for Jim Henry it was to mark one of the last appearances by the man who was such a United stalwart of the sixties. Although, Denis remained at Tannadice for a further year, he didn't figure in the first team again.
