Despite the competition from the Second Division, United found it hard to capture the silverware against a Gayfield side which showed that the gap between the grades was slight. However, in the long run it was United's stamina and firepower which settled the destination of the trophy after a particularly bright final. A rare assist from defender Doug Smith contrived the opener for United when Davie Wilson got a touch to Smith's flick into the danger area to deflect it wide of goalkeeper Gallacher. But it took two superb saves from Donald Mackay to maintain the Tannadice lead before the interval. And it was Mackay heroics which eventually served to clinch the game with further marvellous stops from Adamson, Wilkie and Walker as the Red Lichties pushed hard for the equaliser. However, the game was decided in the dying stages when Kenny Cameron flighted a cross for Alan Gordon to net a header.
