A dose of end of season blues saw United fail to provide anything like enough good football even to defeat second division Montrose in this Forfarshire Cup semi-final. Two goals by Dennis Gillespie in the 27th and 36th minute should have formed a platform for victory, but Ian Gardiner pulled one back two minutes later. The same player put the Angus side level 13 minutes after the interval, but within a minute Jim Irvine had restored our lead.

Two goals in three minutes in the last five minutes, however, created a shock result. Charlie Dunn who was impressive throughout, got their equaliser and Ian Gardiner the winner, with a high lob from the left which cannoned in off the far post, which completed his hat-trick.
