A Scottish Cup tie in October? Well, United's poor showing in the League the previous season brought them into action early, as early as the fourth round, two rounds before the entry of the big guns. Matters weren't helped by the fact that newly appointed manager Reggie Smith hadn't been able to secure any new players in time for the tie, and had to depend on the existing signed players. Even allowing for all that, this was an insipid display as United tumbled out of the cup at the hands of their county rivals. George Crawford scored an OG for United. Albert Craig, William Dunn and Thomas Martin scored the goals for Forfar Athletic.
