Morton opened the scoring in this one when on 25 minutes Harper thundered a shot past MacKay from 10 yards after a good cross by Ferrie and knock down by Mason. Within three minutes Morton had doubled their lead. Cameron fouled Gallacher on the edge of the box and from Murray's free-kick, Mason headed home. Amazingly it was 3-0 two minutes later. Harper beat three men on the wing before crossing to Ferrie who nodded home.United went in at half time with heads down and they never recovered as a minute after the interval they were four behind. This time Mason headed home from eight yards after a good ball by Ferrie. Morton took their foot of the gas after that and lost a goal when substitute Ian Scott glanced home a Wilson cross. A lethal three goals midway through the first half floored United and it was a night to forget for the tangerines.
