Shawfield was sparsely populated as United opened the new season. And the Tannadice men made a slow start to the game and in the first half had some top class saves from Donald Mackay to thank for keeping the score-sheet blank. However, United did move up a gear in the second half and were just taking command when they were dealt a blow thirteen minutes from the end.Stuart Markland brought down McParland about 25 yards out and Hay thumped the free-kick home from 20 yards. However, justice was seen to be done with five minutes left when Davie Wilson hit a great equalizer. Tommy Traynor dragged the ball to the bye-line before cutting the ball back for the winger to head home at the left-hand post. At the death Alex Reid almost snatched both points, but his shot came back off the face of the bar.
