First Team Debuts

United's cup tie a decade ago is not one that will be recalled with any relish. Our visit to Love Street to face a Paisley side, well on course to achieving a Premier place as they headed the First Division, brought about our only fall from grace in the cup throughout our stay in the top divisions.

Keen interest in the match meant the kick-off was delayed as hundreds were locked out as a capacity crowd filled Love Street on a bone-hard pitch, we were given early warning of the task ahead, when Billy Stark missed a penalty.

Nerves in the Tannadice ranks should have been calmed when Paul Sturrock turned a Gordon Wallace pass into the net in 20 minutes. Bobby Torrance snatched an equaliser just two minutes later, however. Bobby Torrance put his side ahead six minutes after the re-start and Frank McGarvey's goal five minutes later left us in dire straights from which there was no recovery. Three minutes from time Billy Stark completed our misery with a fourth goal.
