First Team Debuts

United progressed through to the next round of the European Cup-winners Cup despite a two goal defeat in the Romanian mining town of Petrosani. The team had to negotiate a tough trip through the mountains to get to their tie and it showed in the early stages of the game as the team looked far from comfortable.

Indeed, Jiul spurned two glorious chances early on, first Stocker struck Narey with an effort and them Libardi missed the ball completely just yards from goal. However, after 15 minutes the pressure paid off. Rozsnai found himself in space in the box and slotted past McAlpine as he rushed out to him. Twenty minutes later it was Tonca who got the second, heading powerfully home from a corner kick. The crowd had been given the day off especially for the game and were really driving their team on. The passion ran overboard at one point when Knox was head butted when the referee had his back turned.

United played better in the second half and might have had a penalty when Tonca hauled down Gray in the box. However, Jiul were unable to get the vital third goal that would have taken this match into extra time and were dumped out of the cup despite the victory.
