It was win or burst for United as they faced Celtic who led Section Four by a point. Any hopes United may have harboured for success received a nasty jolt after only eight minutes. Jimmy Johnstone set off on a jinky run releasing Paul Wilson who scored from eight yards. From then on the Tangerines dominated proceedings but, in truth, rarely looked like getting back on level terms. Meanwhile, Celtic always looked dangerous on the break, but nonetheless could have been beaten if United could have converted a small percentage of their pressure into goals. This victory for Celtic ensured that they qualified for the quarter-final stages.
