First Team Debuts

Having already defeated Sheffield United and Leicester City, United added Newcastle to their list of scalps. They scored early on and went on to dominate the game. McLean dropped his two 17 year olds that played at Parkhead and replaced them with experience. Gardner and Henry replacing Narey and Payne.

United took the lead in 15 minutes as they battered Newcastle into submission. It was Frank Kopel who rose to head home a Traynor corner kick. Six minutes later it was two. A long McAlpine clearance reached Gray who powered towards goal. He was tackled as he progressed toward goal and the ball broke kindly for Archie Knox who made no mistake with the finish.

It was two goals in a first half that could have yielded so many more had they taken their chances. There were no further goals in the game but United will travel to Newcastle with a good lead to defend.
