Dundee's run of 29 competitive games without defeat came to an end thanks to a rare goal by Walter Smith. The Tangerines always looked the more likely side in a typical derby contest in which both defences looked shaky. The goal which decided the match came after 67 minutes. Jim Henry chased down the left and crossed to the far post where Walter Smith shot low into the net. Tannadice joy was unmitigated as demonstrated by Wattie Smith kissing his scoring right boot! It was only after going behind that the home side got into their stride, but they were fortunate not to fall further behind six minutes from the end when Doug Smith stepped up to take a penalty after Paddy Gardner was tripped in the box by Dave Johnston. Unfortunately his effort crashed against the bar and Andy Gray headed the rebound over.
